N is for the North Downs

Cutting a large arc across southern England from Dover to the Surrey/Hampshire border is a large chalk escarpment called the North Downs.

It’s a beautiful place, but it;s more than that. When I was flying back and forth to London a couple of years ago this is where I’d go for a walk for an hour or two early in the morning when jet lagged. It was quiet, peaceful and the familiarity was very comforting.

We all need happy places and the North Downs close to Guildford in Surrey is one of mine.

  • I don’t think I’ve ever been on the North Downs, but my school always did a sponsored walk along the South Downs, each class doing a longer stretch than the one below. It was usually a fun day – especially as we got older because we did the last sections meaning we ended up pretty much in Brighton, which was a lively place for us country bumpkins (and “wild” enough to freak our parents out).
My happy place is the botanical gardens here in Montpellier. Oldest gardens in France, built for the School of Medicine under Henri IV in 1570-ish (I think). Right in the city centre, yet you can’t hear traffic at all. Administrative in-fighting means it’s somewhat neglected (kind of how I’d imagine Miss Havisham’s garden in Great Expectations), but I only like it more because of that. It’s the place I go when I know I need to get out of the house after too many days being a hermit.

  • More great pictures of a beautiful place. We all need places that make us smile, thanks for sharing yours, I’ll have to start listing mine.

  • Well I truly liked reading it. This post provided by you is very effective for good planning.
